OUR STORY

The Latin American Institute for Muslim Women (ILMM) arises from the need to educate Spanish-speaking Muslim women to strengthen the roots of Islam in Latin America.

At ILMM, we believe that having Muslim women with understanding of the Quran and Sunnah is the key for the future and development of Islam in Latin America. Women share values and teachings to their children, from the heart of the home. These values and teachings are essential for the progress of any community. Even though, we find that it is very common that in Latin America Muslim women don't have access to learn their faith in their native language. ILMM recognizes that many communities are making an effort to correct these practices,  Alhamdulil-lá. However, they still lack a personalized education focused on women's issues.

ILMM recognizes that a trend that affects our communities enormously is that in several cases women learn Islam from their partners who sometimes use a woman's lack of Islamic knowledge to physically and psychologically abuse her, with the excuse that according to them 'Islam says so'. This causes the woman to eventually divorce taking her children and raising them away from Islam. The Latin American Institute for Muslim Women seeks, among other things, to educate women so that they understand their religion correctly as well as their rights in Islam, so that even if some calamity comes to their life, they can differentiate between what is the Islam and what is the culture of a person.

At ILMM we revive the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who dedicated one day a week just to address women, with themes that were essential to them. He also educated and trained his wives to be able to answer questions from women in the community. Aisha r.a. is a great example for us as she is the second person to report the most ahadith from the Prophet ﷺ. And her knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence was so advanced that, after the death of the Prophet ﷺ, the leaders of the Islamic State consulted her on issues they debated.

ILMM works hard to provide learning and self-improvement opportunities for all Spanish-speaking Muslim women, regardless of their race, country of origin, and economic status. For this reason we try not to deny enrollment to the courses to any sister, even if they cannot afford it. And we offer scholarships and other student incentives.

ILMM also strives to create opportunities for Hispanic sisters who are certified Quran teachers or who have done advanced Islamic Studies. Offering a platform where they can share their knowledge and their studies, receiving a fair payment for their effort.
